The Urban Dictionary defines ‘January blues’ as “the funk that you enter when the holiday season is over”, writes Johanna Bolhoven.
It apparently starts on January 2nd and lasts at least until February 1st and I agree, it’s an unpleasant time of year; the holiday season is over, Spring (and those all important Summer holidays) feel a long way off, and the weather is cold and grey.
Not much to love on that list. So this month, in a bid to boost everyone’s mood, I’m focusing on colour…and not the grey one.
According to Jules Standish, author of How Not To Wear Black and colour consultant, brighter clothes make you happier! Jules says: “Research shows that colours can have a psychological effect. When we look at certain colours it triggers neurological responses in the brain, and causes the hypothalamus gland to release hormones.
“For example, looking at warm, bright colours, such as red or pink, releases dopamine which can improve our mood. Cool blues, on the other hand, have been linked to the release of oxytocin, making you feel of calm.”
From colors that are bright and vivid to those that convey a sense of earthiness, early reports suggest there will be lots of lovely colours to boost our mood next season, and the Pantone Colour Institute agrees. Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute, said: “Our Spring 2017 Fashion Colour Report evokes a spectrum of emotion and feeling; from the warmth of sunny days with ‘Primrose Yellow’ to the desire to escape to pristine waters with refreshing aqua colour, ‘Island Paradise’”.
So what are you waiting for, pick an attention-grabbing colour and lift your spirits…
Emerald green. Not only is this the colour of immortality, life and nature, emerald-green is a good choice if you suffer from blushing as it helps to balance out the complexion. For added oomph combine it with plum, wine-red, or maroon.
Pale (or rose) pink is a feminine and youthful colour and one of the four universally flattering ‘IT’ colours that suit every complexion (the others being Indian teal, eggplant and true red). Add touches of burgundy to make it more elegant.

Bright blue helps to brighten the complexion. If you suffer from stress, wearing blue can help as it stimulates the release of the calming hormone oxytocin.

Khaki is a flattering alternative to black for those of a certain age. I adore adding splashes of mustard but if this is too bold for you, play around with gold accessories instead.
Purple is another calming colour; its pacifying effect makes it one of the best shades to wear when feeling stressed or blue (excuse the colour pun). On the colour wheel, purple and yellow are opposites, which make them complementary, and given that we associate yellow with joy, combine the two for a guaranteed lift.
