Mother’s Day

M&Co floral dress (1)In my job as a personal shopper I regularly style bridal parties, whether I’m helping the bride say ‘I do’ to her perfect dress, finding a dress that ALL the bridesmaids will love, and not forgetting the all-important mother-of-the-bride (MOB) outfit.

Choosing a MOB outfit can be as challenging as finding the perfect wedding dress for the bride herself. ‘It’s my daughter’s wedding but I don’t want to look like ‘mother of the bride’ and I definitely don’t want the typical MOB outfit!’ a client told me recently.

The mother of the bride is without doubt one of the most important people in the wedding party and she will want to shine in the wedding photographs alongside the bride and groom. The bride may be the star, but the mother of the bride is the best supporting actress!

The MOB will want to find something that puts the ‘special’ into special occasion-wear whilst also being original; the mother-of-the-bride does NOT want to find a guest wearing the same one.

We take a look at the most popular 2019 mother-of-the-bride trends guaranteed to make any MOB look equally stunning (while not upstaging the bride, obviously) chic and sophisticated on the big day.

TOP TIP: Ask the bride first if there’s a particular colour she would like you to wear or if you need to take inspiration from the bridesmaid dresses

Rich hues
Traditionally, the MOB should avoid dresses in white, ivory and champagne (that potentially match the bride’s wedding dress) and black gowns (that can suggest mourning). Instead, consider deep and rich hues, like sapphire blue or merlot purple, not only do they add drama to an outfit, they are also very slimming.

It’s all in the detail
Asymmetrical necklines, statement sleeves, high-low hemlines and cape details were big on the SAG, Golden Globe and BAFTA 2019 red carpets, and if you love all things vintage, this is a sure fire way to evoke a timeless look that’s also wow-worthy.

M&Co textured jacket (1)Metallic embellishments
Metallics are an excellent choice for a MOB hoping to wear a dress that’s modern while still remaining age-appropriate. A dress with copper, gold or champagne-coloured detailing will give your outit a regal and glamorous look, which is perfect for a formal affair.

Off-the-shoulder necklines
An off-the-shoulder neckline is utterly timeless and it’s an easy way to achieve an elegant and sophisticated mother-of-the-bride or groom look that feels fresh and new.

Illusion lace
For MOBs wanting a bit more coverage, but still want a dress that’s fashion forward, try an outfit featuring illusion lace detailing. The strategically placed lace shows just the right amount of skin and can be found on necklines, sleeves, and backs.

Embroidered jackets
A jacket can be paired with almost any type of dress, jumpsuit, or trouser-suit and easily gives the MOB or MOG attire a 2019 upgrade. Opt to wear the jacket during the ceremony and then take it off during the reception to mix up your look from day to night.

Floral prints
There is truly no better print for wedding attire than floral, especially during the warmer summer months. If chosen with care a dress covered in colourful blooms, or another soft print, is a subtle way to evoke a unique and romantic look that is oh-so gorgeous.
