Outlook is fine – Clare Nasir’s books for kids

CLARE-NASIR-PHOTO_webA fully qualified, Met office-trained, weather forecaster with twenty years’ experience, Clare Nasir’s first love has always been weather and science. Her qualifications speak for themselves with a degree in maths, Masters in applied oceanography and a diploma in environmental policy.

During her ten years as GMTV’s weather anchor she was in charge of the output and production for science and weather stories.

Today, as a freelance presenter, she works for BBC North West and as a weather pundit on various TV and radio stations, including BBC Breakfast. She recently co-presented the much-acclaimed children’s science documentary series Fierce Earth for CBBC, now in its second series.

Clare moved with her husband Chris Hawkins (BBC 6music DJ), and her daughter Sienna (aged 5), from central London to Cheshire three years ago. “It’s been a successful relocation and we have made many friends.

Since moving I got a publishing deal with Rudling House – a dream come true. My first book, Colin the Cloud, reached no.1 in the Amazon kids charts last year – and it’s follow up, Steve the Stratus, is being launched this week and my third book, The Showbiz Clouds, is out this Autumn.”

Writing regularly for the Huffington Post on science and weather, and many other newspapers and magazines, including First News, the children’s newspaper, her love of science is accompanied by a wealth of qualifications.

Clare is the ambassador for the National Campaign on Healthy Air, this involves working closely with environmental law firm, Client Earth, and speaking for the campaign at the House of Lords as well as other events and press interviews.

She is also an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust and is a proud member of the Cloud Appreciation Society.Clare-Nasir-Ringwood-Signing_web

Clare lives in Wilmslow. “Sienna now has a lovely Cheshire accent, and we have settled into life up here very well. I continue to work in London, but also at the BBC in Salford and Leeds. In my spare time I conduct talks at schools about weather, science and motivational issues.”

Clare loved learning about the natural sciences as a child and I still remembers how magical it was to see a text book theory come to life, whether it be about the structure of a cloud, or how sand is formed on a beach.

“Learning should be fun and exciting, and what better way to introduce kids to science but through stunning artwork and dynamic tales.

My Illustrator, Ana Carloto O’Shea, is a fellow maths grad with further qualifications in fine art. She is Portuguese but lives in Wilmslow with her husband and son (who is in the same class as my daughter). Ana ticks every box for me and has been a great collaborator. Her art is beautiful, technical yet reaches the imaginations of young children.”

My books are all about igniting kids’ passion for science and weather through storytelling, beautiful imagery and a bit of clever science. I wrote Colin the Cloud and Steve the Stratus over ten years ago and have continually tweaked the storyline.

For me the books unite some simple meteorological concepts with fun storylines.”

Clare has a busy schedule of book signings arranged in Waterstones and Independent stores

9780992868925--STEVE-THE-STRATUS-COVERSteve the Stratus cloud is stressed – his job is to drizzle which makes everything grey and dreary. Luckily his friend Lisa has plans for a fabulous new career. But will this be enough to brighten up Steve’s day?  A funny and colourful story of friends following their dreams.  The tale provides a wonderful insight into the workings of weather.

Steve the Stratus is a rhyming story for 4 to 7 year olds. As well as being packed full of fun and adventure it has some key learning points about weather and simple atmospheric physics. It is a great talking point for parents and their kids and a perfect platform for a school lesson on weather.

Clare’s meteorological expertise, journalistic experience, coupled with being a mum of a four-year old, bring the elements of storytelling and solid science together.9780992868901_web
