Waterbank is an exclusive collection of five strikingly designed homes by Property Alliance Group, set within a tranquil woodland backdrop in Prestbury, one of the most picturesque villages in Cheshire.
It’s certainly an accomplished piece of residential architecture that wouldn’t be out of place on the property programme, Grand Designs. Johanna Bolhoven spoke with lead architect on the project, Annabelle Tugby, to find out more.
Annabelle Tugby Architects specialises in high-end residential projects ranging from bespoke one-off homes for private clients to multiple residential units for property developers.
Her work is contemporary in style and she is known for creating designs that fit beautifully into their surroundings, resulting in architecture that celebrates beautiful materials, textural contrasts and finely crafted minimalist detailing.
Waterbank features five, light-filled homes that fit in perfectly amid their surroundings, as Annabelle explained: “These homes provide an expanse of open-plan living spaces, planned meticulously with modern family living in mind”.
Each five-bedroom (or four-bedroom plus one ‘whatever-you-want-it-to-be’ room) family home is set in approx. half an acre of landscaped gardens, within a secure gated community.
“Waterbank presented us with one of the most exciting opportunities for contemporary architecture in Prestbury. It’s a spectacular woodland site of three and half acres and I wanted to take optimal advantage of the exquisite setting. I was lucky to be able to work in an unrestricted manner and dedicate time to being fully creative and create something different.”
The site used to be a large garden comprising vegetable plots and orchards. In its centre nestles ancient oaks, evergreen pines and a large pond (which used to be the village ice rink); all of which provided Annabelle with inspiration for the design.
“The unique plots called for a response to the shape of nearby tree canopies, root protection areas and ponds on the site. Each dwelling is rooted in its landscape and has been carefully designed to sit in the clearings between the trees, angled towards the best views, and although each house is different, when viewed from various angles they look like a group.
The pines, which are synonymous with Prestbury, are beautiful tall trees that create wonderful light in a very natural setting; I wanted each house design to reflect and connect with the natural beauty of the trees that surround it.”
Each house was modelled in 3D four or five times before the design was finalized. This process connects the designer and the design through the act of building and guarantees the final design is of the highest quality.
The result, a set of exceptionally sculptural houses with pale brick plinths, large areas of glazing dappled by beautiful timber louvres, all under cranked natural stone roofs, is unique.
A key design trend for 2020 is structured simplicity; evolving from the Nordic Retreat trend of 2019 this look is ‘stripped back’ style. The purpose is to create a calm, comfy, chilled-out space to relax in – it’s all about making your home a safe, inviting space to rest and regenerate, and this is exactly what Waterbank sets out to do.
Rooms have earthy moody tones which contrast harmoniously with the natural and contemporary materials used. This is living space that inventively (through the use of large format glass) uses natural light throughout the day, generating a real feeling of openness.
Extensive gardens wrap around the houses and landscaping will have a mix of formal and ornamental planting, smart hedging and large expanses of manicured lawns.
An electric gate opens into a driveway with bridge and pond. This shared entrance leads to private driveways for each property.
Developers, Property Alliance Group, instructed independent estate agents, Holmes-Naden, a modern sales and lettings agent with branches in Bollington and Prestbury, to handle sales.
Edward Naden said: “Waterbank is a wonderful new development featuring fabulous design. About 1.5 miles north of Macclesfield, Prestbury has shops, bars and restaurants aplenty; lovely green spaces, great schools and excellent transport links too.
Best of all, the homes themselves are wonderfully spacious and designed with you in mind.”
Set in the desirable and sought-after village of Prestbury, this unique development offers purchasers luxury homes within a short walking distance of local amenities, including a great range of restaurants, bars and country pubs.
Less than 300 yards from Prestbury train station; ten minutes from Macclesfield town centre and 25 minutes from Manchester airport, these strikingly designed homes start at £2.25m and the development is in its early marketing stages.
The number of people moving into new-build homes is on the rise and one plot on Waterbank has already been reserved. Enquire now and you could get a say in the design of your dream home.
