Freemasons’ BBQ raises a sizzling £800 for The Christie at Macclesfield.

The Old Castle Lodge in Macclesfield raised £800 for The Christie appeal recently with a summer barbeque.

Around 100 tickets were sold for the event hosted by lodge member Norman Bebington and his wife Bronwyn at their home in North Rode, Congleton.

For each ticket sold, £3 was donated to The Christie at Macclesfield appeal to bring care closer to home for cancer patients in Macclesfield and the surrounding areas.

A raffle was also held and donations were made on the day.

Several members of the lodge and their wives have been touched by cancer recently and treated at The Christie. Norman Bebington, who hosted the barbeque, is currently going through treatment for prostate cancer and the wife of a lodge member, Bev Currie was very recently told she is cancer free after being treated by The Christie.

Bev was originally diagnosed with cancer around six years ago and was told she was in remission. Unfortunately the cancer came back. Due to the treatment she was receiving, she was unable to drive. She had to use public transport to get to The Christie, which she found traumatic and distressing. She commented: “Being able to have treatment closer to home in Macclesfield would have avoided this distress.

The Old Castle Lodge is very keen to support The Christie at Macclesfield project so that others do not have to go through the same experience.”

The Christie charity supports the work of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust providing enhanced services over and above what the NHS funds. This includes money for care and treatment, research, education and extra patient services.

Gifts from the public make a huge difference to the care and treatment that The Christie is able to provide to our patients and their families.

The charity has more than 53,000 supporters who helped raise £13.9m last year.

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust was the first specialist trust to be rated as ‘Outstanding’ twice (in 2016 and 2018) by the health regulator the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

It referred to The Christie as ‘a leader in cancer care’ and ‘a pioneer in developing innovative solutions to cancer care.’ The CQC praised the Trust’s staff which it said ‘go the extra mile to meet the needs of patients and their families’ and that they were ‘exceptionally kind and caring.’

In 2017, the CQC rated The Christie as the best specialist trust in the country, and one of the top three trusts overall in England.
