My Chat With A World Champion
John H. Stracey, born on September 22, 1950, is a former professional boxer who competed from 1969 to 1978; a former welterweight world champion, beating Jose Napoles in Mexico City, he held the WBC and lineal welterweight titles between 1975 and 1976.
John, who is a close family friend, was a delight to chat to; a true gentleman who I have been privileged to know for many years along with his beautiful wife Kathy.
He told me many stories, mainly about his outstanding career but a few that shocked me as I hadn’t heard them before.
John told me that just before his fight in Las Vegas, against Danny McAloon, Elvis Presley walked up to him, put his hand on his arm and wished him luck for the fight.
Now, for those of you who don’t know, my Dad, Willie Morgan, is a HUGE Elvis fan and our family home had a room/shrine dedicated to Elvis.
Even to this day, Dad’s fans still comment on ‘Willie’s Elvis Room’.
John also revealed that he played a major part in the making of the film, ‘The Krays’, acting as the boxing trainer.
John H. Stracey is one of Britain’s greatest World Boxing Champions.

Black Tie & Slippers
Denise Welch & Bruce Turner hosted ‘Black Tie & Slippers’ from a venue in Manchester for the Royal Mc Donald House in Manchester serving Royal Manchester’s Children’s Hospital, St Mary’s Neonatal Unit, a space to give families the chance to stay close to their child whilst they are in hospital. A great success helped by a host of celebrities and a great amount raised for the charity – well done to everyone involved.
A music legend
Johnny Mathis has one of the music industry’s most treasured voices and a massive fan base that has resulted in hundreds of millions in record sales worldwide, as well as place in the Guinness Book Of World Records.
Uncle Johnny (I consider him family) has come to stay with us every year since I can remember. As soon as those Christmas songs start, his huge hit – ‘When a child is born’ – is played everywhere throughout the festive period.
Every Christmas day we call John and he speaks to each of us individually but not before his round of golf on the Riviera golf course.
Johnny was best man at my Dad and Kay’s wedding in Las Vegas. His friendship with Dad spans over decades as both share a love of golf.
I have a great story to tell you in the New Year involving two legends of music, Johnny Mathis and Sir Cliff Richard.
