Stockport Grammar School’s First XI has won the Schools Hockey Championships for girls after a 1-0 win in the Final at London’s Olympic Park.
The squad, captained by Meghan Myers, were appearing in the finals for the second year in a row after winning the north of England title in November.
Head of hockey Sharon Withington said the girls couldn’t have given any more: “Having not seen the trophy in the north for over 20 years it is an absolute delight to be crowned national champions.
The girls faced some really tough opposition and not one of them could have given any more on the pitch. Maya Gordon in goals made a string of outstanding saves in every match to keep the scorelines in our favour – she was simply outstanding.
I would like to thank the school and Governors for all of their support and, most of all, the parents who all travelled to London to spur us along on a very special couple of days.
You can relive the drama of the finals as it happened on Twitter – and read the dozens of tweets of good luck and congratulations that SGS received..
