As a child, I remember my grandmother taking me into Knutsford shops where products were displayed in bulk, in large boxes or in open hessian sacks. Shopkeepers would weigh the goods she selected before popping them into a paper bag.
Quite often, even the paper bag was surplus to requirements, and the loose products would go straight into grandma’s shopping bag. So, no plastic or polythene wrapping to dispose of.

In May of this year, Charlene Stuart re-introduced that concept at her new stall at Knutsford’s indoor market. Her business – The Plastic Free Weigh – stocks a variety of carefully sourced products, using minimal (if any) packaging.
Already, Charlene’s increasingly popular new business is expanding into a second stall, after less than a month of trading.
The additional space will allow Plastic Free Weigh to add to its stock range – both traditional weigh and save, and eco-products.
Charlene said, “The response I have had since opening has been really encouraging. Having the new space ensures I can add new products to the range. For example, walnuts, chia seeds, muesli, wax food wraps, wild bird seed and eco sanitary products. I hope people love the stall and I am always happy to chat with customers and listen to any ideas they have.”
Town centre manager, Sandra Curties, said, “Plastic Free Weigh is a great addition to the market hall, and we are delighted that Charlene has fitted in so well. We have a wider mix of traders in the market now, so we urge anyone who hasn’t visited for a while to pop in – you might be surprised!”
Knutsford Market Hall is open every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8am to 4pm.
