Who looks after your pets when you are away from home? We all have busy lives – daily family and work commitments, business trips, family holidays, special occasions – and part of our planning process must include provision for our pets to ensure they remain safe and well until our return, writes Peter Pickering.Pam Tyers and Bracken
While some of us have trusted friends, neighbours or family members who have the time, the knowledge and the confidence, to look after out little friends during our absence, others may need to look for other options to enable our pets to be looked after in their own homes or in specialist accommodation.
It’s been a year since we first reported on Prestbury resident Pam Tyers and her new business Prestbury Pets. The former Astrazeneca employee embarked on her new career last year following successful completion of an MSc in animal behaviour.
Pam offers a comprehensive range of pet services primarily focused in Prestbury but with clients in Tytherington, Wilmslow and Mottram. Her services include one to one dog training, dog walking and home care visits for cats and caged pets.
Pam is keen to stress the benefits of offering a personal service, tailored to the needs of the families and their pets. “Trust and responsibility are a massive part of running this business. I aim to really get to know the families and the pets I train and look after; I love them like they are my own.
One to one training means you get a lot covered in a session and really get to grips with any issues. Cats are so much more settled in their own homes compared to catteries. They soon get used to me coming and going and love the fuss and attention. And the dogs I walk? Well, they are normally waiting for me at the door!”
Prestbury Pets is fully licensed and insured. Find out more by visiting www.prestbury-pets.co.uk; by finding Prestbury Pets on Facebook or by calling 01625 827950.
Over in Mobberley village, Emma Bell and David Swann, have seen rapid growth in their dog-care business, Home from Home – which they describe as ‘the kinder alternative to kennels’. “We have clients throughout Knutsford and the surrounding areas.”
After experiencing the expensive and sometimes miserable problem of leaving their best friends in kennels, they decided to begin their own fully licensed and insured dog-minding service.
Launched four years ago, initially as favours to friends and neighbours, Home from Home has grown steadily by word of mouth since then.
“Dogs live with us in our own home, a loving, safe and secure environment,” Emma explained. “We provide a free meet-and-greet opportunity to ensure that your pet will be happy with our own very lazy rescue greyhound, and rather more energetic Bedlington whippet”
Dogs are walked twice a day and receive cuddles and treats, so they will certainly not experience the loneliness of kennels.
“We provide day-care or longer-term boarding, and if you go away on holiday, we will even send you photos and texts so you can see your dog enjoying its stay with us!” David told us.
Emma and David can provide references from many satisfied dog owners. Here are a couple of examples:-
“Emma has looked after our two setters and we always know they are in safe and loving hands when Paddy and Finlay stay with her. They have freedom to play, have regular walks and are treated as part of the family” (Kieran Maguire)
“Doggy home from home, my whippet loves his day care and boarding with Emma and David so much he’s excited to go in from the minute we pull up outside. True dog lovers, a very happy customer” (Caroline Lynch)
“It gives us great peace of mind when we go away, to know that our dogs are at Emma’s. They love going there and we know they will be safe, properly exercised and well cared for. They also enjoy having the other dogs to play with.” (Christine Horgan)
