Top impressionist, Alistair McGowan, is used to taking on a lot of different personas. But now he’s facing one of his biggest challenges yet.
The role he will be playing is that of a world-class Scrabble player. Alistair, a huge fan of the game who takes his board with him wherever he goes, will be competing in a prestigious tournament against some of the greatest players on the planet.
Twenty Scrabble meisters from around the world – including two former world champions – will be taking part in the tournament in Knutsford, Cheshire from 26-30 November 2014, and Alistair will need to match them word for word.2005 world champion Adam Logan
And he’s not the only celebrity player taking part. As well as squaring up to Scrabble royalty like Adam Logan from Canada, world champion in 2005, and Pakistan’s Moizullah Baig, the reigning World Youth Champion.
The tournament is the brainchild of Knutsford’s Mark Nyman, Britain’s only ever world champion, who won the title in 1993. Mark was also the first ‘Champion of Champions’ on Channel 4’s Countdown, and went on to produce the show.
Countdown’s dictionary expert Susie Dent will be adjudicating the tournament.
“I wanted to bring together the most exciting Scrabble players in the world.” said Mark “And to have a top celebrity player like Alistair taking part adds a fascinating new dimension. It will be a kind of Intellectual Big Brother, and Scrabble will never be the same again.”
Alistair plans to do some serious training in the run-up to the event, memorising as many two and three-letter words as he can. And he’s feeling optimistic: “Sometimes, we all know, it’s about the pure luck of what tiles you get out of that bag. On my day, I could fancy my chances against anyone. Jonathan Maitland will be the man to beat”
